january mosaic

jan mosaic small

I'm late with this thanks to my computer screen woes. I don't think I noticed any trends in my photos, other than I tend to take photos on my way to/from lab or the gym. I guess I like trees and frozen things, too, and not people. I'm finding it easier to remember to take photos now than I did when I first tried this in November. It might be that my camera fits in my jacket pocket so it's easier to pull out. I hope not, though, because I just got a new jacket with smaller pockets.

Mii

IMG_7376a

One of my housemates got a Wii for Christmas. I resisted playing it for a while, because he only had one controller, so everyone would be watching whoever was taking a turn. I was happy just to sit and watch everyone else play. Eventually, the Wii owner decided to make a character for me, anyway. It was kind of uncomfortable to sit there while my housemates kept staring at me, trying to decide on the right eyes, nose, chin etc for me. Once they'd made the Mii for me, I played a game of bowling, though, and it was fun. I scored way higher than I ever have in real life, too.

my arm - platelets

IMG_7351

I donated platelets today. It was more successful than the last time I tried, when they gave up after about 20 minutes of alarms going off every few seconds. Still, the nurse told me I was a challenge.
The first time she measured my blood pressure, it was 87/65, but they don't like letting potential donors go, so she waited and read it again, and it had gone back up to normal. Last time I gave plain blood, the nurse repeated the haemoglobin test, because it was 1 point under the cut off, too.
I really hope I never need a lot of IVs, because my veins suck. At least she did find veins the first time. She told me afterwards that next time I should drink a lot before coming. Apparently 2.5L wasn't enough.
The alarms did go off a few times, still. Once because I was too cold (my circulation apparently sucks, too). There was nobody around to ask for a blanket, but then I got scolded for letting my veins contract. My lips were feeling kind of tingly by the end and I probably should have said something about that, but I don't like making a fuss... I'm not sure if I want to give platelets again, though.

Bonus photo: Tonight's dinner was Ianqui's risotto with sausage and arugula. It was delicious; thanks, Ianqui!

oops

This was a dangerous street for groceries this morning. There were a couple of roadkill onions a few metres away, too.

snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes

I love walking in snow. I feel like I'm in a snow globe. I always get My Favourite Things stuck in my head, too (in case you hadn't noticed).

warm woollen mittens

snowflakes

I finished my mittens just in time for the snow today. They're pretty warm, but I wouldn't mind another layer on my fingertips. I almost slipped over on the way home because I was distracted looking at the pretty snowflakes that stuck to the mittens as I was walking. I didn't think any of my photos of them had worked, but I kind of like this one.

cheese beignets

IMG_7075

This was my contribution to the feast my house had today. The darker, rounder ones were the first batch made according to the recipe, the others after the intervention of my New Orleans-educated housemate. They both tasted pretty good, though.

inbox

IMG_6961

I reread Getting Things Done this weekend and tidied my room with the aim of implementing at least some of the GTD system. The first step is to put everything that needs sorting into an inbox. Mine is kind of overflowing... And now I'm losing momentum before I get to the actual processing stage. At least everything other than my desk is tidy.

Bonus photo:

That was actually surprisingly painless. Of course, I mainly just filed or threw stuff out. I haven't actually done the whole "next action" thing on what's left. The worst thing I found was that the very bottom layer of the pile was my last attempt at GTD from about 9 months ago...

for B* and Sheepish

IMG_6945

I feel kind of guilty about all the cool stuff WWF sends me. So far, I've got a thermos flask, gorgeous wrapping paper and holiday cards, a calendar and this pin. I should send them some more money. Although, then I wonder if they're really an effective charity if they're spending so much money of giving me stuff...

I think my mum would find it easier to shop for me if I were still 5

IMG_6938

Not that I don't think they're adorable, still. And, don't worry, the story that came with them makes it clear that the penguin was very lost to end up near the polar bear.

You might think I'm giving up the identity of Commonwealthland, but part of my family is in a C'land I've never lived in.
